Labomat News N°19

Our new general catalogue
is about to be printed...

Unfortunatly, we only planned a french version at this time. We present many news products. In exclusiveness, we give you the possibility to visualize (in pdf Acrobat Reader format) the 12 sections of this catalogue by using the following links (sorry it is french !):

Decorative glitters Surfaces control

Instruments & Specialities----

And now, the news...

COLOUR - Vintner Viewer

September is traditionally in France the period for wine's fairs. So, here is the Vintner Viewer, cabin of observation especially adapted to wines and bottles.

The Vintner Viewer is of particular interest to those involved in the importing or bottling of wine, spirits or soft drinks. The unit contains two light sources to check for the presence of sediment, crystallisation, cork particles, cloudiness, and any other foreign bodies. Suitable for white, rosé and even red wines in coloured bottles, the Vintner’s Viewer can also be used to check for any contamination in spirits, clear lemonade, cola etc.

The separately switched light sources enables bottle and contents to be examined in both vertical and horizontal positions. The length of the horizontal aperture is adjustable to accommodate various bottle sizes.

Thickness -Transducer selection

The MX and PX thickness gauge from Dakota Ultrasonics are inherently capable of performing measurements on a wide range of materials, from various metals to glass and plastics...
But different types of material will require the use of different transducers.

Generally speaking, the best transducer of a job is one that sends sufficient ultrasonic energy into the material being measured such that a strong, stable echo is received by the instrument. Several factors affect the strength of ultrasound as it travels.

  • the stronger a signal is to begin with, the stronger its return echo will be. Initial signal strength is largely a factor of the size of the ultrasound emitter in the transducer. A large emitting area will send more energy but some transducers may simply be too large to be used in tightly confined areas.
  • Higher frequency ultrasound is absorbed and scattered more than ultrasound of a lower frequency. However, low frequencies are less directional than high frequencies.
As always, selection of the proper transducer is often a matter of tradeoffs between various caracteristics. It may be necessary to experiment with a variety of transducers in order to find one that works well for a given job.

WEATHERING - Black panel Thermometer

BST ou BPT ? Insulated or non-insulated thermometer ?

The Black Standard Thermometer (BST) is a relatively new thermal sensor used for natural and accelerated weathering. It can be found in several ISO specifications. The sensor was developped in Europe as an alternative to the Black Panel Thermometer (BPT) which is currently used widely in the USA. The BST, which is an insulated thermometer, is intended to give a more accurate estimate of the true temperature of exposed materials. It typically reads up to 5°C higher than the BPT. Generally speaking, the BST can be use for material having a bulk mass but the BPT is better when controling the temperature of flat metal panels.
Finally, we have to keep in mind that all black panel thermometers are only an approximation, the best approach is always to measure the actual temperature of the test specimen itself.
Standardized salt for Salt spray Tests
In order to guarantee reliable tests of corrosion by respecting the international standards, it is important to use specific sodium chloride to carry out the salt solution. It is however difficult to get " small " quantities of salt from the manufacturers. Labomat Essor thus chose to store this salt for you in order to be abble to deliver quantities by bag of 25 kg, more adapted to your consumption. Contact us!

VISCOSITY - Controlled rate or controlled stress ?

With the new range of R/S and SST 2000 rheometers, Brookfield company now proposes economic solutions for the measurement of viscosity using the controlled stress technology.
So, is it time for you to consider viscosity measurements using this technology ?

Controlled rate :

Brookfield is the world leader in the field of the viscosity measurement with rotary instrument, i.e. in the field of controlled rate viscosity. This simple reliable and durable concept consists in rotating a spindle at constant speed in a fluid and to record by means of a spring, the resistance to the movement what the material opposes. With certain accessories and by taking measurements at various speeds, it is possible to carry out rheological curves that are good representation of the flow behavior of your products.

Controlled stress :

Controlled rate viscosimeter finds its limits in the control of the semi-fluid products like creams, gel, pastes, etc where it is necessary to quantify the resistance of these products at rest. It is indeed impossible with controlled speed instrument to make a measurement at null speed. These products which present a yield point, i.e. a minimal energy necessary in order to make them flow, also have a time of recovery of structure and a rate of reconversion after shearing. It is in the determination of these significant parameters that the measurement of viscosity with controlled rate technology is essential. Our specialists in rheology are at your disposal to carry out tests on your products.

The Brookfield viscometers are untiring!
Like our English Brookfield colleagues, we seek the owner of the oldest analogical Brookfield viscometer still in service inside the French territory. To take part, you just have to call us, give us the age of your instrument, the model and the serial number. The winner for 2002 will be determined on December, the 31 2002. We will offer him a free participation in one of our Brookfield seminars and a free maintenance for this instrument.

Seminars for Brookfield viscometers users

We planned two new sessions in November 21 and December 12. These formations will take place in our new premises. We will present the wide range of viscometers and accessories and will be able to do measurements on your samples in order to illustrate our matter.

OTHER PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Companies that can do some tests for you.

The acquisition of some laboratory equipments is sometimes difficult to justify when the need is limited. We established a listing of accredited companies which can carry out different tests for you :

  • Corrosion and weathering test
  • Abrasion test (Taber)
  • Microhardness test
  • Control of rheology, color, etc.

We can give you a listing of companies. You can also contact us if you wish to propose your services.

New generation of micro temperature recorder/logger

The smallest temperature recorder with a digital display !
This reliable, simple and low price instrument can memorize up to 3900 values at choosen interval of time. The logger displays the current temperature but it can also displays the lowest and highest temperatures reached since the beginning of the recording. Index of protection IP65. Its price is only 139 Euros including its software!

We hope that you liked reading our newsletter and it provided information of particular use to you. We await your comments and suggestions.
Best regards.
