Labomat News N°23
Our internet site is now more consistent...
Our site was getting old. The content was quiet poor and there were
not a lot of interactivity...
It is now different...
The complete content of our general catalogue is now on line. All our
instruments can be visualized through nearly 60 new pages. An alphabetic
index on top of each page gives the possibility to move from page to
page much more quickly and easily. We invite you to visit our new pages
and send us your comments.
French and Dutch versions are now operational. Unfortunately for you
English speaking people, you will still have to wait few weeks more!
The English version still have to be translate. That will be our summer
work…
We think that internet and the email improve and fasten the exchange
of information. We do all our best to use them to please you.

And now, the news...
ADHESION OF COATINGS - New adhesive tape
 |
The 250 adhesive tape manufactured by 3m, approved
by the French automobile sector for the Cross Hatch Test is
no more available. After studies, the adhesive tape
reference 2525 from 3m was found to have the same adhesion
power than the 250. The R&D departments of PSA and Renault
so validate this tape for Cross Hatch Cutter test standard.
This new adhesive is available through Labomat Essor under
reference 99C2525X24. This tape is orange. That can be surprising
and confusing for some well-experimented users |
THICKNESS
- PosiTector 6000 - The gauge!
| |
PosiTector 6000 is not a new product
in our range. It is however a the best choice for the thickness
measurements of coating on metal substrates. Among its many advantages,
here are some that are not so well known: ·
- Complete interchangeability of probes.
- · Long-term accuracy.
- Measurement of conductive coatings.
- Measurement of non-conductive coatings on slightly magnetic
substrates.
- Immunity to magnetic fields.
- Probe cable reliability.
|
| Consult the English PosiTector 6000
documentation (PDF format) for more details. |
FILM APPLICATORS - Bar coater
| |
The bars coaters are well-known
and well-used instruments to carry out regular films of paints,
varnishes, cosmetics, etc. The available thicknesses go from
4 µm to 500 µm. Our standards thicknesses, i.e.
the bars coaters which we deliver from stock, are 10, 16, 26,
36, 50, 76, 100, 128, 150, 200 µm.
The even thicknesses are always available. The odd ones (for
example 15 µm, 25 µm, etc...) are not.

| To assess the durability of coatings
on wood, a special wood coatings cycle has been developed that
uses the QUV/Spray. The cycle is the result of a multi-year EC
study called “ARWOOD” that was performed by 10 European
research institutes and 4 coatings manufacturers. Preliminary
research evaluated 7 different test cycles. Once an optimised
cycle was identified, the collaborating labs tested it against
12 different coating systems. The collaborators examined cracking,
gloss loss, erosion, and general appearance to compare the QUV/Spray
against outdoors. |
The wood coatings cycle begins with
a 24-hour condensation step. The long duration of condensation
drives moisture into the wood and effectively reproduces the high
moisture content observed outdoors. Next, a sub cycle of alternating
UV and water spray is repeated 48 times. While the UV photochemically
attacks the wood and coating, the rapid cycling of wet-dry and
hot-cold creates mechanical stresses. The high volume water spray
erodes away the damaged by-product.
Here are the details of the cycle:

VISCOSITY
- Measurement of pasty products
| It is difficult
to measure the viscosity of semi-solid products with the
controlled speed method (the Brookfield traditional technique).
These almost solid products at rest have a viscosity which
decreases with time as soon as one makes them move. They
also tend " to make their hole " around the spindle
in rotation and it is also difficult to introduce a spindle
without breaking its structure. For these products, until
now, only the expensive technique of controlled stress measurement
of viscosity was applicable. We invit you to read the two
Labnotes from Brookfield to understand the interest of this
technique.

| The vane spindle
geometry is now accessible thanks to the economic YR1 Brookfield
rheometer. It gives a fast way to determine the yield point
and the consistency of products at rest. The vane spindle
can also be used with the traditional Brookfield viscometers!

AFTER SALES SERVICE – Our moving team
| The After Sales
Service has always be one of the Labomat Essor priorities.
The checking / certification of your equipments
is one of yours. When some instruments are difficult to
move because of their size, or when the number of instruments
to be checked is significant, it is more interesting for
you to ask our after sales service to visit your lab.
Mr. Maintenance can relate to your park of viscometers
Brookfield, the corrosion and weathering tester from Ascott,
CW, Q-Panel, Wallace, and any other equipment promoted
by Labomat Essor.
|
| For France, Mr. David
Vieira does the majority of visits, which requires him
a great availability and good sense of organisation.
For Belgium, where the
distances are reduced, the repairs on site is common.
Our Belgium team so includes a moving technician. Mr.
Stephan Guth, from Brussels, covers the Belgium territory
and part of north and east of France.
